At Egglescliffe School, Quality First Teaching forms the cornerstone of our inclusive approach to education. It ensures that all pupils, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), receive high-quality, differentiated instruction within the mainstream classroom. QFT is the first level of support in the graduated approach outlined in the SEND Code of Practice: 0–25 years, and it is delivered by all teaching staff as part of their everyday practice.

Teachers implement a range of QFT strategies to ensure accessibility and progress for pupils with SEND, including:

  • Differentiation and Scaffolding Tasks are adapted to suit varying ability levels, with support structures such as sentence starters, visual prompts, and guided steps to promote independence.
  • Multi-Sensory Learning Approaches Lessons incorporate visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic elements to cater to diverse learning styles and enhance retention.
  • Use of Visual Aids and Key Vocabulary Displays, diagrams, and word banks are used to reinforce understanding and support language development.
  • Flexible Grouping and Peer Support Pupils benefit from collaborative learning opportunities, with groupings designed to maximise engagement and peer modelling.
  • Assistive Technology and Adapted Resources Where appropriate, pupils have access to laptops, reading pens, coloured overlays, or enlarged print to support their learning.
  • Structured Routines and Predictable Environments Consistent classroom routines help reduce anxiety and improve focus, particularly for pupils with neurodiverse profiles.
  • Positive Behaviour Management Clear expectations, praise, and restorative approaches are used to create a safe and respectful learning environment.
  • Formative Assessment and Feedback Teachers use questioning, observation, and pupil self-assessment to monitor progress and adjust teaching accordingly.
